The European Biotechnology Renaissance

The European Biotechnology Renaissance

Once viewed only as a matter of innovation policy, biotechnology is now a strategic asset for economic growth, public health sovereignty, international trade and national security. Yet, despite its strengths, Europe is losing ground to global competitors. How can European policy help restore Europe’s global competitiveness in biotechnology before it is too late to act? In a new policy brief with the support of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA), The European Biotechnology Renaissance: The Role of European Policy, the Lisbon Council draws on research, expert interviews and case studies from the U.S. and China to assess Europe’s position, identify structural challenges and put forward strategic policy recommendations. One important message stands out: Europe does not need to replicate the U.S. or Chinese models, but lead on its own terms. It needs to mobilise its pension capital, fast-tracking clinical trials, standardising data, scaling networked hubs and reforming markets to build a future-ready life sciences ecosystem.
