Artificial intelligence is making the headlines today. But while the debate around artificial intelligence governance continues to intensify, real-world applications have long been shaping how to navigate risks, amplify innovation and ensure safe implementation. How can Europe bring together the high-level policy discussions and the hands-on experiences of these sectors already pioneering safe artificial intelligence innovation?
To tackle this question, the Lisbon Council convened AI Safety in Practice: What Can Pioneering Sectors Teach Us About Safe AI Innovation?, a high-level roundtable bringing together leading voices from business and government for an open, solutions-driven discussion on how to move beyond official statements to implement artificial intelligence safely and foster innovation.
Nikki Pope, head of AI and legal ethics at Nvidia Corporation, flew in from California to share best practices for artificial intelligence safety. Her remarks set the stage for a deep dive into the European vision for innovation led by Kilian Gross, head of unit for artificial intelligence regulation and compliance at the artificial intelligence office of the European Commission. Among the other high-level VIPs taking part were Lionel Ferra, team leader, software and artificial intelligence, directorate of human and robotic exploration, European Space Agency (ESA); Prof Dr Mario Fritz, faculty member, CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security and honorary professor, Saarland University; Antoine Gautier, chief scientist and co-founder of QuantPi GmbH; Mimmi Gersbro-Sundler, vice president, clinical data and artificial intelligence governance, Novo Nordisk; and Anders Sjögren, senior technical leader, data analytics and artificial intelligence-enabled engineering, Volvo Cars.
