The Lisbon Council convened the Virtual Town Hall Meeting on Citizen Data in Focus: Machine Learning and Data Analytics for Citizen Support and Government Savings. Bringing together data experts, top civil servants, European policymakers and researchers, the interactive meeting was held in the margins of SEMIC 2020, a high-level European Commission summit. Annika M. Jacobsen, head of the data mining unit at ATP-Udbetaling Danmark, a welfare benefits administrator in Denmark, delivered a ground-breaking keynote on the way Denmark is using machine learning and data analytics to tackle welfare fraud. Seth van Hooland, programme manager for interoperability at the European Commission’s DG informatics, and Charlotte van Ooijen, research fellow for digital government at the Lisbon Council, also spoke about their recent work in this cutting-edge field. The virtual town hall meeting forms part of Data Analytics for Member States and Citizens, a year-long study that analyses cutting-edge applications of public data-analytics in Europe and beyond. The project will also look at ways of scaling up data driven public services across Europe.
