On the eve of landmark talks in Sharm El-Sheikh at the 27th UNFCCC Conference of the Parties meeting, the Lisbon Council launches Driving Innovation to Curb Climate Change: Recommendations for COP 27.
The policy brief is the first intervention from Senior Research Fellow Dirk Pilat, formerly deputy director for science, technology and innovation at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Dr Pilat joins the Lisbon Council team as senior research fellow, innovation and green transition, where he will have a mandate to develop climate-focused initiatives and propose evidence-driven solutions that bring the world closer to net-zero emissions. The programme and policy brief will support the European Green Deal and the broader, global programme to reach net-zero emissions.
The policy brief looks at the crucial role of innovation in delivering meaningful carbon-emission reductions – and holding global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees celsius as 196 governments pledged to do at COP 21 in Paris. He proposes a unique four-point framework with key deliverables for governments, citizens and stakeholders alike.
