As the Digital Markets Act makes its way through the European Union legislative process and members of the European Parliament prepare to table amendments on the text, the Lisbon Council convenes the High-Level Roundtable on Competition and Innovation: Why Europe Needs Dynamic Models in Digital Markets – and How Europe Can Build Them. Joined by an eclectic audience of competition law experts, academics, policymakers and digital aficionados, David Teece, professor of global business at the Haas School of Business (University of California at Berkeley) and Henry Kahwaty, former U.S. Department of Justice antitrust division economist, launched a new research paper on Is the Proposed Digital Markets Act the Cure for Europe’s Platform Ills?. Benedict Evans, renowned technology policy thought-leader and venture partner at Mosaic Ventures and Entrepreneurs First; Annabelle Gawer, professor of digital economy at the University of Surrey; author of Online Platforms: Economic and Societal Effects; Pierre Régibeau, chief economist at the directorate-general for competition in the European Commission; and Stéphanie Yon-Courtin, member and vice-chair of the committee on economic and monetary affairs at the European Parliament and rapporteur for the European Parliament’s Annual Report on EU Competition Policy 2019, joined a broad and thought-provoking discussion on the future of competition policy in Europe.
